What is Unlawful Discrimination?
Discrimination is treating someone differently. It is unlawful to discriminate in the workplace against employees on a number of different grounds. These include:
Disability
Age
Gender Reassignment
Marriage & Civil Partnerships
Pregnancy & Maternity
Race Religion or Belief
Sex or Sexual Orientation
The main legislation in this area is The Equality Act 2010 (the Act) which consolidated and replaced most of the previous discrimination legislation for England, Scotland and Wales and covers all the areas above which are known in the Act as ‘protected characteristics'.
There are also other areas where discrimination is unlawful and these include:
